Simple lawn watering. Calculator.

Most of us probably measure lawn watering by times per week and minutes per zone. But... A lawn doesn't need times and minutes – a lawn needs a specific amount of water, measured in millimeters. Different lawn irrigation systems and sprinklers spray completely different amounts of water in the same amount of time. Therefore, to achieve a better result than your neighbor, we must not be lazy and measure the capacity of our irrigation system.
So, in short:
1. Millimeters, not minutes. The "golden" standard for a healthy lawn is 25–30 mm of water per week. Rain counts :)
-
1 mm = 1 liter per 1 m²;
-
if your lawn area is 100 m², it needs about 2500 liters (2.5 m³) of water per week. Feeling stingy towards nature? The owner has to do it;
-
on hot days (+30°C and above), this need increases to 35–40 mm, while in spring or autumn, 15 mm is sufficient.
2. Calculating your millimeters. We recommend a simple "can" test:
-
take several identical cans (e.g., tuna or cat food) and place them in different areas of the lawn, but within the same irrigation zone;
-
turn on the irrigation for 15 minutes;
-
after irrigation, use a ruler to measure the water depth in the cans (mm) and calculate the average;
-
enter the resulting number into our calculator – this way you will know exactly how many minutes your sprinklers should run.
3. Important: minutes are calculated per irrigation zone.
If your irrigation system is divided into several zones (e.g., 3 zones), remember – the calculator result applies to one zone. For example: if the calculator shows 40 minutes, it means that each zone should run for 40 minutes.
4. The best time for watering is from 4:00 to 9:00 AM:
-
disease prevention - a lawn watered in the morning dries quickly as the sun rises. If you water in the evening, the lawn will remain wet overnight, creating ideal conditions for fungi and mold to spread;
-
efficiency - in the morning, the air is cooler and the wind is weaker, so the water does not evaporate as quickly.
5. Watering strategy - less often, but deeper.
Avoid watering a little every day. This encourages roots to grow on the surface, making the lawn susceptible to drought. By watering generously 2 times a week, water will penetrate 15–20 cm deep. This will force the roots to grow downwards, where the soil will remain moist longer – the lawn will become stronger, denser, and more resistant to heat.
