Frequently Asked Questions

How to choose lawn seeds?

If you are not a professional and are planning to sow a new lawn or renovate an old one, we recommend choosing from the assortment designed for home lawns. Evaluate the sun exposure of your future lawn – will all areas receive sun for at least part of the day? Will there be areas that are shaded all day, with no sun at all? Do you have or plan to have an automatic lawn irrigation system? Will the lawn be more ornamental, or heavily used (children, pets, various games, etc.)? How will the lawn be mowed, i.e., will you have time to mow the lawn frequently? Do you have/plan to mow the lawn with a robotic lawnmower? Do you enjoy lawn care, or do you want to spend as little time as possible on your lawn?

In short – the most popular ornamental lawn is Resilient Blue Lawn. The most popular solution for heavily used lawns is RPR Lawn. For shade – Shadow. For larger areas, for robotic/lawnmower cutting – Mow Saver. For those not planning an irrigation system – Water Saver. And for lovers of exotic, natural, and diverse lawns – Happy Lawn!

If you are a lawn enthusiast, or will become one – you can boldly consider the next level – lawn seeds from the golf and sports assortment. Most often, for home lawns, RPR Golf Ultrafine, Resilient Blue Golf, Resilient Blue Sport, Resilient Blue 100% (yes, it's a dream – 100% Kentucky blue grass!) are sown.

How much grass seed is needed per 1 are?

On each package of Barenbrug lawn seeds, you will find precise sowing rates. On average, it is recommended to use about 2.5–3.5 kg of seed mixture per 1 are (100 m2). We recommend slightly increasing the rate to 3-4 kg per are if a new lawn is being sown. For overseeding, the rates will be lower.

What is the difference between cheap lawn seeds and professional ones (e.g., Barenbrug)?

Professional mixtures are characterized by high germination rates, better genetics (slower upward growth but denser tillering), greater resistance to diseases and trampling, and "cleanliness" (the amount of weed seeds and other undesirable species, e.g., annual bluegrass, in the mixture). Research, discoveries, technologies, seed purity, freshness - all these become advantages when choosing high-quality lawn seeds. By investing in quality seeds, you will save time and money on fertilizers and re-seeding in the future. A thought for consideration - is it possible to save money by buying cheap lawn seeds? From a current perspective - yes. But will that saving not turn into much greater expenses in the longer term? An example. The best seeds for home lawns - Resilient Blue Lawn, 15kg (750m2) costs 170 EUR, or 11.33 EUR/kg. For very cheap, possibly unsorted seeds with weeds and impurities, you would pay 5-6 EUR/kg. Comparing a 15kg quantity of seeds (~5 ares of lawn), you would save about 80-90 EUR, but will you not have to re-seed the lawn after a year? If we compare it to not the cheapest seeds, the saving would turn into 20-30 EUR.... Is this the amount worth risking for? It's up to each of us to decide. Seeds are a crucial factor for a beautiful lawn. Making a mistake here renders everything else meaningless.

How to plant a lawn effectively?

The quality of a new lawn is directly related to the seeding process. The more correctly you sow, the faster and better quality lawn you will have. The most important factors are: seeds germinate when fully embedded in the soil, with sufficient temperature and moisture. All this must be ensured. In addition - a sufficient amount of fertile soil - at least 10-15cm.

Lawn seeds should be embedded into the soil about half a centimeter deep. For this, the soil should be "roughened" before sowing, and after sowing, worked lightly with a rake again so that the seeds are covered. Another method is also possible - after scattering the seeds, cover them with a thin layer of peat. Good seed coverage, in other words, embedding into the soil, is vitally important for germination. The better you do this, the more sown seeds will germinate, and the lawn will become dense immediately. Imagine this - if you scatter 100 seeds on the soil surface, under good conditions, perhaps 20-50 of them will germinate. If you embed them well, you can expect 95-99 plants.

After sowing the seeds well, watering becomes vitally important. For a few weeks, while the seeds are germinating, we recommend watering frequently and briefly. During the day, from early morning, every 4-5 hours for a few minutes. Once the lawn has germinated, the watering regime should be completely different. Example - 6:00, 10:00, 14:00, and 18:00 for 10 min. This way, the soil surface will always be moist, but at the same time, there will be no accumulation of water that has not had time to soak in.

Should I use fertilizers during sowing? Which ones?

It is not essential, but we recommend using fertilizers during sowing. The fertilizers should be low in nitrogen but rich in phosphorus and potassium. Colloquially, these are referred to as "autumn" fertilizers. After sowing the lawn seeds, spread the fertilizer, and then incorporate both the seeds and fertilizer into the soil, as discussed in the previous question.
