Cylinder lawnmower blade sharpening

We sharpen reel mower blades using professional sharpening machines. Reel mower blades consist of two separate blades – a rotating reel blade and a stationary bottom blade (also known as a "bedknife" or "bottom blade"). Both of these blades are sharpened on separate machines – these are completely distinct procedures. Before sharpening, we always check the overall technical condition of the blades – it is common to have to replace blade bearings with new ones.

First, we thoroughly clean both blades and separate them from each other. The reel blade is placed into the sharpening machine so that after sharpening, it forms a correct cylindrical shape – by no means a cone, where one side of the blade is more worn than the other. The bottom blade has two important angles ("front angle" and "top angle"), which vary depending on the manufacturer. The intersection of these angles forms the sharp edge that contacts the reel blade and is arguably the most important factor for quality cutting. After the sharpening procedure, both blades are reassembled and checked. The end of the sharpening procedure is the so-called "paper test". The blades must cut paper at every point.

For Allett, Atco, Qualcast, and Swardman mower blades, we can sharpen them without the mower itself – you only need to bring us the cassette (at Švitrigailos g. 11k-102, Vilnius). We can collect and return cassettes throughout Lithuania using DPD parcel lockers. For other manufacturers' blades, we will ask you to deliver them together with the mower (if the reel and bottom blade cannot be removed from the mower together, i.e., as a single unit).

Mower manufacturers recommend sharpening blades on machines at least once a year – at the end of the season, along with preparing the mower for the new season. Mid-season, a "backlapping" procedure is recommended.
